COMPREHENSIVE REHABILITATION NURSING COURSE:
THEORY AND APPLICATION * OCTOBER 14-16, 2011 * 8 A.M. TO 5 P.M. * 24 CONTACT HOURS
Purpose
This course is designed to provide rehabilitation healthcare professionals (RNs, LPNs, Case Managers), the knowledge needed to care for patients in rehabilitation settings across the continuum of care.  This course is also intended to be a comprehensive review for the CRRN examination.

Description
The course involves three full day sessions using lecture, discussion and demonstration to cover the important aspects of care in rehabilitation.  The content will cover anatomy and physiology, specific disease processes and the rehabilitation treatment plans required to successfully care for these patients.  This course is grounded in the interdisciplinary perspective even though there is a strong nursing focus.

OBJECTIVES
  • Provide a comprehensive overview of rehabilitation concepts as they relate to all healthcare professionals
  • Assist in preparation for the CRRN examination
  • Provide recertification hours to renew for CRRN

SCHEDULE
Friday, October 14:
  Explanation of the course and schedule; theory and philosophy of rehabilitation; general rehabilitation interdisciplinary assessment; nutrition; elimination; skin integrity; swallowing; cardio-respiratory; and sleep and rest

Saturday, October 15:  Neurological assessment; stroke; impaired communication; TBI; neuromuscular diseases; deconditioned patient; geriatric rehab; pediatric rehab; orthopedic-musculoskeletal; impaired mobility and disuse phenomenon (will include a hands-on demonstration of transfer techniques and positioning)

Sunday, October16:  Self care and ADLs; SCI; burn rehabilitation; diversional activity; pain management; amputees; sexuality and sexual function; case management; team and communication; performance improvement and program evaluation; test taking strategies

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT
This course has been approved for 24 contact hours.  This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
